# Components

A **component** is a kind of hardware that devices report [calibrations](https://docs.mirurobotics.com/cfg-mgmt/concepts/calibrations.md) for, such as an arm, a RealSense D435 or a Robotiq 2F-85.

## Properties

**name** `string`

editable (Property can be directly modified)

A human-readable display name, derived from the slug, so `realsense-d435` becomes `Realsense D435`.

Examples: `Kuka Arm`, `Realsense D435`, `Robotiq 2f 85`

**slug** `string`

immutable (Property cannot be modified)

A unique, code-friendly identifier that devices report calibrations with.

Slugs are immutable and must satisfy the following constraints:

* Contain only lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens (`-`)
* Start and end with a lowercase letter or digit
* Contain between 1 and 32 characters

Examples: `kuka-arm`, `realsense-d435`, `robotiq-2f-85`

**roles** `[] Role`

The purpose a unit of the component fills on a device, such as its position on the robot or which side of the gripper it is on.

A device with two arms might report them as `left` and `right`.

Roles are optional, so a device with one arm, calibrated one way, reports only the component.

Examples: `front-left`, `front-right`, `back-left`, `back-right`

**aspects** `[] Aspect`

The parts of a unit that are calibrated separately.

A RealSense D435 might have the aspects `intrinsics` and `extrinsics`.

Aspects are optional, so a device with one RealSense D435, calibrated one way, reports only the component.

Examples: `intrinsics`, `extrinsics`

## Create a component

Platform API (Platform API does not support this operation)

Components, roles and aspects cannot be created directly. Instead, they are created when a device first [reports a calibration](https://docs.mirurobotics.com/cfg-mgmt/report-calibrations.md) that uses them.
